Facebook

We are building technologies that help people connect with family and friends, find communities, and grow businesses.

Facebook is an American online social media and social networking service based in Menlo Park, California, and a flagship service of Facebook, Inc. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, with fellow students and roommates from Harvard University, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes.

Initially, the designers restricted Facebook access to students from Harvard. Membership was expanded to Columbia, Stanford, and Yale before expanding to include the rest of the Ivy League, MIT, and Boston-area higher education institutions, then various other universities, and ultimately high school students. Anyone claiming to be at least 13 years old has been allowed to become a registered Facebook user since 2006, though this may vary according to local laws. The name derives from the repositories of Facebook sometimes offered to students at American universities.

In 2003, while attending Harvard University, Zuckerberg built a website called "Facemash" The platform was similar to Hot or Not and used "videos gathered from nine Houses' online facebooks, putting two at a time next to each other and telling users to pick the "hotter" guy." In its first four hours, Facemash attracted 450 visitors and 22,000 photo-views.[18] The site was sent to several campus group listservs but was shut down by Harvard administration a few days later.

Zuckerberg faced expulsion and was charged with breaching protection, infringing copyrights, and violating privacy. The charges have been dropped, in the end. Zuckerberg focused the semester on this initiative by developing a resource for social research instead of a final review of art history. He posted all the art photos to a website, each followed by a comment line, and then shared with his classmates on the internet.
